I believe I have just discovered one of my favourite books this year. Two story lines, one set in the early 19th century takes us from the gentle Suffolk countryside to the battlefields of Waterloo and the ports of Spain where we follow and reflect on the life, loves and fortunes of Waterloo veteran and inveterate letter writer Stephen Fairhurst. In 1976, young Anna finds herself living in the house that was once Stephen's, unravelling Stephen's secrets through his letters and discovering love with Theo, a war photographer in exile.
