This is the accompanying publication for this special collection of Taranaki treasures from the Puke Ariki heritage collection and new artworks that reflect the culture of Taranaki. The exhibition explores the art and literature, lifestyles, value systems, traditions and beliefs that make Taranaki a place like no other. Fifteen artists, each with a link to Taranaki, have responded to specific items from the heritage collection selected by Puke Ariki Senior Researcher Ron Lambert. Ron has carefully and personally selected a variety of unique objects that provide an illustration of what it means to be a 'Taranakian'.Curated by Bill Milbank, Taranaki Culture: fresh out of the box features new works from Mark Billinghurst, David Clegg, Ian Clothier, Nicky Foreman, Nicole Freeman, Paul Hartigan, Ngahina Hohaia, Rangi Kipa, Richard Mathieson, John McLean, Leonie Smith, Hemi Sundgren, Sopolemalama Filipe Tohi, Terry Urbahn and Tim Wigmore. These artists have produced works in a variety of media including paintings, photographs, installations and sculptures, launching Taranaki Culture: fresh out of the box into both an art and object realm.
